Our Amazing Oceans & Alexander von Humboldt
Posted onAlexander von Humboldt was a brilliant scientist, ahead of his time, and one of the most influential scientific figures of the 19th century. He made important discoveries, including the Humboldt Current with its rich source of fish. The current, also called the Peru Current, is a cold, low-salinity ocean current flowing North along the western coast of South America. It is the most productive Eastern boundary current system and accounts for roughly 18-20% of the total worldwide marine fish catch: sardines, anchovies and jack mackerel. Toni McKeen explains how it affects our weather with El Nino and she will also cover the serious state of the Great Barrier Reef and Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
